I’ve been talking all week how much I learn from simple conversations. Sometimes the best learning experiences I’ve had are in private conversations with the best in the industry. Even at times it can be hard to hear what others really think about our DVRT Ultimate Sandbag exercises, it is good too because it gives an opportunity to help dispel some misconceptions. That happened to me this past week when I got to spend some great time talking life, training, and DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training with one of the most influential people of functional training, Mike Boyle.
Having the chance to have a few drinks and talk with someone who is such a legend in giving real, honest, and industry changing ideas is simply priceless. While it was good fun and so interesting to hear Coach Boyle’s stories on life and how he got to where he is, it was also interesting to hear his thoughts when DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training came up!
One of the things I appreciate most about Coach Boyle is his willingness to change if you give him good reason. He isn’t ever stuck on any one thing, so if you can be thoughtful in your ideas, he is pretty open. That is why it was so good to hear him admit that at first he didn’t think much of our DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training program. Okay, that part wasn’t good to hear, but when he said how when DVRT Master, Andrew McConaha, stopped by and gave a few hours of DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training his perspective completely changed!
Gotta give Coach Boyle credit for filling his own Ultimate Sandbags!
With all the good things he now saw in DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training he also told me how he would often say that he HATED our MAX Lunge. He thought maybe it was “gimmicky”. Of course I never want DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training to be thought of that way, I pride our business and program on being genuine, honest, and the best representation of our true beliefs of how to make people better.
However, Coach Boyle isn’t probably alone. The truth is that we live in a challenging time where information is judged in an often less than one minute video. Trying to explain the concepts, the progressions, and foundations can be a great challenge in today’s social media world. Yet, when I was able to convey these ideas to Coach Boyle I think he started to change his view points.
People misunderstand our MAX Lunge and the progressions all the time because they focus on the wrong aspects of DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training. The purpose of this exercise is to resist movement while we produce power in a functional position. We don’t want the body to rotate (except some thoracic rotation), we want to RESIST it as we move progressively with more and more power in the drill.
Renowned strength coach Robert Dos Remedios shows the power of this Ultimate Sandbag Training exercise, but that doesn’t mean we ever lose the intent!
This means it is a true multi-planar exercise, training the body as we would in walking, running, and most every day activities. We teach the body to work as a sophisticated unit, we build stability, mobility, and power all at once. However, we don’t start with the big swing that most people think of with this powerful DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training exercise.
Jessica shows first we want to teach the concepts of this movement. We want to teach how to create a strong foundation with creating tension at the right moment, using the right muscles, and being fluid while being powerful. This seems like a lot and why the MAX Lunge is one of our more advanced DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training exercises.
Even when we want to venture to the MAX Lunge we can’t forget the essence of the exercise. It is such a unique movement for many of the reasons I already described. When we add in the fact that we have a dynamic lift/chop we begin to realize that the ways to dissect and progress the MAX Lunge to gain its many benefits end up feeling endless!
Yet, DVRT Masters, Elizabeth Andews and Ian Vaughn, show how accessible this drill can be if we pay attention to the right aspects of DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training. It isn’t about how fast you go, how much weight you use, or how big you swing. It IS about the intent in which you use and perform this DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training drill.
What separates our program from so many is the deeper layers that we have that give so much more meaning to our DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training movements. That no exercise is more important than another. Rather, with a system, instead of a group of exercises, we can find the RIGHT exercise. THAT is what makes DVRT so powerful!
