You might think that I would suggest EVERYONE use DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training. That couldn’t be further from the truth! There are A LOT of people that I think shouldn’t be using DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training. What?! No, you heard me, not everyone should be using our program. In fact there are three really good reasons that if you fall into one of these categories you really shouldn’t be using DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training. Not only you shouldn’t be, but I wouldn’t recommend you use our program.
I’m JUST Going to Use It For Some Variation
I’ll be honest, if you are thinking of using DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training just to spice up your deadlift, squat, rows, or whatever you would normally do with the barbell, don’t bother! Sure, I could go on to tell you how different these exercises are with the Ultimate Sandbag, but that isn’t the point. We don’t hold any one exercise in higher regards than another, that is the whole point in having a system versus just a bunch of exercises to throw out there.
Understanding how we progress through functional movements not only opens endless variety, but more importantly gives purpose to your training. Should you deadlift with the Ultimate Sandbag? I don’t know, what is your goal, what do you need, what are you trying to get out of it? I’m Using It Because It Is Unstable
Sigh, I get it, if you asked me when I started this crazy ride why I even made my own sandbag in the first place I probably would have said, “because it is so awkward, so unstable, so unlike anything else!” Well, I would have been PARTLY right. The truth is that over the past ten years of teaching, developing, and evolving DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training I am convinced it is THE most misunderstood strength training implement out there.
If you think Ultimate Sandbags use is based upon their instability, it just tells me you don’t understand them at all. In fact, there would be no need to use smaller Ultimate Sandbags. They would all be these huge, dumpy, floppy, bags. Oh wait, those suck right? The reality is people try to base new things off of what they already know. In most cases when it comes to strength training, that means the barbell, or dumbbell. In our DVRT educational programs I tell coaches the first thing they must realize is that the Ultimate Sandbag is NOT a barbell, dumbbell, or even kettlebell. It has many more unique aspects to it than any of these tools, instability being just one of them.
What makes DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training so special is that you can load the body, train in patterns and angles that are either impossible with other tools or require a whole gym to accomplish what DVRT can with a singular tool! Small Ultimate Sandbags aren’t that unstable, they aren’t meant to be. That is because our smaller Ultimate Sandbags are designed for something different. Sure they can be a progression of some base movements, but they are made to MOVE. What do I mean? They allow you to move in athletic ways that most strength training tools don’t and still avoid the circus tricks that others TRY to copy with in our system.
THIS is the reason that sandbags were such an important part of wrestler programs, not just due to their instability. Legendary coach, John Jesse wrote about the importance of lighter sandbag training….
“…used to strengthen the wrists, arms, and shoulder muscles and the rotational muscles of the lower back, sides, and abdomen.” That was back in 1974, imagine if Mr. Jesse had access to the knowledge of the body we have now, not to mention the Ultimate Sandbag. That was a start, but where we have now taken Dynamic Variable Resistance Training (DVRT) evolved “sandbag training” from a dungy piece of equipment to a standard in fitness.
Understanding DVRT Ultimate Sandbags have both a load and dimension component allows you to solve your fitness needs more effectively as well as building more variations/progressions of movement. We don’t use each Ultimate Sandbag the same way, if you don’t believe me check out our coach DVD HERE

I like to think I am a realist, most people will add more than one piece of equipment to their workouts for one reason or another. Would I like everyone to benefit and use DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training? Of course! Yet, I know there will be some that always see it as a “sandbag”. I laugh because the engineering that goes into the Ultimate Sandbag is second to none especially compared with iron pieces of equipment. Even with that said, I know the Ultimate Sandbag gives you potential to do great things. DVRT gives you the know how!
