When I first began training people it was something I didn’t really think about. Why would I even think about power training when I wanted to help people lose fat, build better looking muscles, and address the typical goals of the general fitness client. Funny how 20 years later, much of what we are doing with DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training has caused me to have a completely different view point on not just how to perform power training, but also why!
I’ll give credit where credit is due, Crossfit really brought the idea of power training really into the mainstream. However, outside of just wanting to do cool lifts, why should one care about power? After all, when many people see power training all they think about is how they are going to hurt themselves!
First it is important to note that power is not going to be the same for an older person who has never trained as it is for an athlete. However, power training is important for both!
The first quality we lose as we age is power! If you look at one of the biggest fears of older people it is falls. There are many reasons falls can occur in older populations but a big one is not having the power to accelerate and decelerate properly. As you can imagine, the failure of deceleration is where so many people fall. That is why in DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training we spend SO much time talking about deceleration and resisting force!
Power is also one of the best ways to tap into the fast-twitch muscle fibers. These are the fibers of great strength and have the best potential for hypertrophy. Now, the time under tension of most power moves don’t make them ideal for muscle building, but using power training like in these Ultimate Sandbag Training moves will make them more efficient for everything else you do and make them far better trained!
We also have to realize that a BIG part of real world strength is what is known as rate of force development. That cool term basically says that how much force we can develop is irrelevant in the real world if we can’t develop high levels of force very quickly. Most real life and sporting actions happen VERY fast, so you actually have to train your body to develop high levels of force quickly! That is a big part of DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training, learning to be more reactive with our strength training!
Jessica showing that to move a Burly Ultimate Sandbag you HAVE to put it all together into one powerful movement!
Lastly, power training can be one of the best ways to create really smart and effective high intensity fat loss and strength training programs. As the old saying goes, “you can’t sprint a mile”, sprinting is a great example of a very powerful action, but it also has a large toll on the body.
Whether it is due to accumulative injuries, being de-conditioned, or degenerative issues in the spine, knees, etc. Many people have a hard time using high impact, high intensity exercises in their HIIT programs.
Power movements like those in DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training are unique because not only do they help us with the benefits of higher intensity training, they also build injury resiliency. They require us to have a strong foundation of good movement, strength, and mobility. That is why DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training is all about progressions and the instability of the Ultimate Sandbag cause the body to have to react to power.
DVRT Master, Steve DiTomaso of Envision Fitness, shows how we build layers to power movements.
That means it isn’t just about producing power which most people get super infatuated with. Due to the fact DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training has instability to it, you must own the posture, alignment, and technique, otherwise you simply won’t make the exercise.
What is MOST exciting to me about DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training is that we focus on the reactive nature of power training. So many times the reason that the training we do in the gym does NOT transfer to outside of the gym is we lose focus to what we actually do in the real world. Reactive power means both quickly producing force and reacting to the unstable movement and implement with perfect alignment and posture.
See how power training in DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training can be very foundational to quite complex. Building layers of stability, control, strength, and mobility actually allow us better power training that makes the work we do in the gym come alive outside of it! Great work by Amanda Thebe, Jared A. Forestieri, and Ryan Williams showing how these ideas really work!
