I was thinking what to write today. Do I talk more about planes of motion, calories burned, or muscles worked? Hmmm, the more I thought about it, I thought fitness can be explained better than that!

Is fitness about that stuff? To some degree, but those aren’t the reasons we perform the fitness programs we do. What is the REAL stuff that actually matters? The stuff that actually changes peoples lives. Is it hitting a personal best on a lift? Losing 20 pounds? Not being in pain? I think the simple and complex answer to all of this is, yes!

To me fitness became a lot easier to understand when I did one thing, I stopped looking in the gym. While there are plenty (trust me I am happy to have my fair share of gym geekisms) fitness pros that want to argue about power, maximal strength, VO2max, foam rolling, whether or not to stretch, if we all just take a breathe and stop looking in the gym I think we will see things so much clearer.

After all, fitness is not really about what we do in the gym, but rather what we do out of it! Just watch, watch what? Take a look at what people do in their lives! From playing with their kids, working in the yards, participating in weekend softball leagues, picking up their groceries, going for a hike, I could keep going, but do you see it?

Have we lost focus on what the goal of fitness really is? 

All of these simple, simple things require us to do one thing, move! The real purpose of strength, power, lifting, sweating all really has the same goal, to make us move better. There is no point in being “strong” or “powerful” if it can’t relate to how we live our daily lives and make us more efficient at the day to day things we do all the time.

Maybe I can be more sensitive to this idea as having had my body fail me a few different times and fearing not being able to do these simple daily activities scared the crap out of me. Then I realized, movement is freedom, it is our best expression of our connection to ourselves. When we lose that, we lose more than just a few activities, we lose in many ways our freedom.

That is why so many of us our surprised to see people with obvious limitations do such amazing physical things. “How could they?” “Why would they?” often are words we utter. The reality is they don’t want to give up that freedom, it is something so many of us take for granted, until we don’t have it any longer.
