Are You Strong Enough? Ultimate Sandbag Training

The great thing about sports, is that if you pay attention, they can teach you a lot of life lessons.

One of the greatest lessons I took away was what to do when things aren’t going your way!

There were more than a few occasions during my basketball life that things definitely were not going my way. I remember my favorite coach reminding me to think of my foundations.

Take that deep breathe…

Go back to the skills that everything is based upon…

Remember your fundamentals!

There are few better examples of this than the classic movie, “Hoosiers”

In a lot of ways, life and fitness are very much the same way.

When people ask me about nagging injuries, or why they are stuck in plateaus I look at their foundations. How do they perform the movements that set forth the skills for more complex exercises? Is there program built on a strong foundation, or the novelty of many different workouts?

It can be overwhelming and remembering your foundations doesn’t mean being stuck at them for the rest of your life!

When things are not going right though, they are your source, they are your building blocks. It can be really tough to admit that you actually need to spend more time working on them.

Life is a lot of the same.

When I felt overwhelmed, stressed, a bit buried, I stopped.

Sometimes it was my choice to stop, sometimes something really important in life happened to remind me to stop.

Chances are the solution to both life and fitness issues comes back to look at your foundations. What is really important? What is it that you really want to have? Can you suspend the need to please everyone or to look cool in order to actually achieve these goals?

Back when I coached basketball I would get really frustrated with a lot of the kids. They were more interested in doing the “cool” tricks, the Youtube moves, the stuff that looked impressive from the outside. Yet, they lacked the very foundational skills that would allow them to actually get on the court, to get to the next level, or to do the things the team really needed from them.

Often times what makes someone or a program great is their ability to do the “little things”.

They will work on those foundations harder than anyone else.

Why?

When things get tough, it will be those foundations that you lean upon.
Whether it is trying to push through a tough workout, progress to a new exercise, lift a new weight, or develop the type of life for yourself you really want!

It isn’t easy, but it is all so worth it.
