I’ve probably only heard it a handful of times. People that really don’t mind how they perform in life, just as long as they look good! It kinda reminds me of one of the classic movies from my teenage years, “White Men Can’t Jump!” In the movie Woody Harrelson is so mad at Wesley Snipes because in his mind Harrelson believes that Snipes would rather, “look good and lose, than look bad and win!” In a lot of ways I think there are a fair number of people in the gym that feel the same way.

 

Don’t get me wrong, they will try to justify what they are doing by a few different strategies….

-How could you say I’m not real world strong? You see how much is on that bar! (of course as they are geared up looking like a gym mummy)

-I train for life that’s why I just knocked out 1 million burpees (unfortunately about 999,980 looked really bad!)

-Who needs to be strong in life when you got guns like these! (no explanation needed is there?)

 

Of course I am making light of some of the common ideas I do actually hear from people in one form or another. In reality, I think a lot of people do believe that you can’t train for function and look great at the same time. That somehow, functional fitness is like eating those steamed vegetables. You know they are good for you and you should do more of it, but man, it just doesn’t taste as good as that greasy cheeseburger (yes, I am putting in the typical “sexy” exercises as the cheeseburger.

The truth is that good functional training SHOULD make you both real world strong, resilient, AND yes, look really good! Sure, you may not believe me, but think about it, why would training your body the way it is designed to move do anything but incredibly positive things to your fitness?!
