I can’t blame him for asking, seriously! A few weekends ago at one of our DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training certifications, a young coach asked me the question that I believe many have. “I get how this would make me move better, but will I look good too?”
In a lot of ways it reminded me of a similar question when I was teaching in Moscow. A coach asked me, “is this strength training or functional training?” My answer to both questions is a resounding YES!!
Really, the answer lies in the term itself, “functional”. Unfortunately, so many people only see functional training as “making you better for real life.” Yea, that doesn’t sound like a bad thing, but you gotta go a bit deeper to really get it! “Functional”, improving ones ability to function. That may sound pretty duh to you, but we can also think of function as efficiency. Teaching and training your body to work as it was naturally designed is like putting the highest grade of gas in your car. Sure, your car can run on the cheap stuff, but man, you can really super charge your engine with the premium stuff!
That is what using DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training is like as far as being fuel for your body. Sure, you can do other things and do okay, but this stuff is like the premium gas. When you train the body as it is designed to move you feel muscles you didn’t know you had, you build strength you didn’t think possible, and you begin to move like you didn’t think was possible anymore.
Yes, I am going to say it, sometimes something isn’t better than nothing. If that something tears up your body, breaks you down, and goes against what your body was suppose to do, maybe nothing was better! You can see why I believe in learning just a little bit about your body really empowers you to train it in smarter and more natural ways. So, how do you go about doing so? Personally, I like the word foundational over basic. I believe that anyone and everyone will have to revisit the foundations. It is that strong foundation that helps you build up to anything you want, including looking way better!
