This weekend started out with the always extremely fun and educational Perform Better Summits. For those not in the industry, the Perform Better conferences have become one of the premier fitness educational conferences. The line-up of speakers is like a “who’s, who” in fitness.
No, not your early Sunday morning infomercial types, but people bringing the real science of fitness to the industry. I’ve loved going to these events for our seven years. In the past few years it has been an honor to become a speaker at these events. This post isn’t about that though.
Every year I try to sit in on as many speakers I can to hear new ideas, or sometimes just new ways of thinking about old ones. This year was no exception. My two AH-HA moments came during the great presentations by renown experts, Gray Cook and Alwyn Cosgrove. Both are two top industry pros and were presenting on completely different topics!
Gray was presenting on “Balance, Posture, and Motor Control” while Alwyn presented on “Metabolic Resistance Training”. Seemingly two VERY different topics, but not so fast! As I listened intently to both I started to make a really interesting connection.
First was Gray when he said something very intriguing that I think got overlooked. He spoke about having posture under load. Why he liked things like loaded carries as an assessment just as much as an exercise. Being able to maintain posture during movement was something he said was very important, hmmm, sound familiar?

Then Alwyn was talking about how things like DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training and TRX training were the future of fitness because they were “alive and asymmetrical”. As I listened to Alwyn explain the REAL science of fat loss, I began to notice a connection.
