I get asked almost once a month, “Josh, you must have a TON of kettlebell people into DVRT right?!” You would THINK that the crossover of Ultimate Sandbag Training and kettlebells would be a rather natural one. After all, I have documented here on our blog more than a few occasions how my early kettlebell training inspired a lot of ideas for DVRT.
Kettlebells and Ultimate Sandbags have a natural synergy if you know how they can work together.
Yet, the kettlebell community has been kinda slow to accept DVRT like I would have thought. Why? I really think there are kinda three reasons.
The first is that for many years those in the world of kettlebells has been told time and time again that the kettlebell solves all their issues. Kettlebells are a PHENOMENAL tool, but just like even Ultimate Sandbags, they have their limits. Instead of thinking of how there is only one tool, trying to build synergy amongst the tools should really be our goal.
That leads us into the second reason. I really believe that kettlebell coaches look at some of our foundational DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training moves and think, “that’s the same as I do with a kettlebell” and therefore they write them off as being the same!
This is a HUGE mistake because there are MAJOR differences! Let’s look at a few examples. Thankfully we have Master RKC and DVRT coach, Steve “Coach Fury” Holiner, to walk us through a few of these examples.
So if you thought we were trying to discourage you from your kettlebell use that isn’t the case at all. That brings me to the last reason that I think kettlebell enthusiasts are somewhat apprehensive about learning more and using more of DVRT. They think we are going to take what they love away from them.
As Coach Fury shows below, that isn’t the case at all. In fact, I think TONS of kettlebell people would be shocked to know that all we are trying to do is HELP them do what they love better! Giving them more options to solve movement strength needs and help them find the whole in their fitness more efficiently.
In all honesty, I think there is a “trinity of fitness” which is build strength for the real world. I think that is DVRT Ultimate Sandbags, kettlebells, and body weight. How does it get any better?
