Making It In Fitness

2100x730 (6).jpg

One thing I wanted to do more and more in 2016 is to feature successful gyms that are changing fitness. Making DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training a big part of what they do, not only are they seeing amazing results in their clients’ results, but their business’ bottom line.

That is why today I wanted to share the great story of Curtis Hoesktra of Rockstar Bootcamp in Phoenix, Arizona. What is so inspirational is how Curtis is able to reach such a diverse group of people and best of all deliver them an empowering experience with smart fitness. Check it out!

JH: How did you get into fitness? What made you decide to open your own facility?

CH: I entered the fitness industry as one on one personal trainer in 2001. I really enjoyed the chance to create an amazing, fun experience for my clients – but I soon realized that being surrounded by a bunch of ‘exercise machines’ at the big box gym I worked at wasn’t where I needed to be.

I had a vision of being able to build a community of folks, who (regardless of age, sex, current fitness level or ability) could find inspiration, motivation and stellar results inside a properly designed training program…without ‘gimmicks’ or a lot of ‘traditional’ equipment. After much trial and error, Rock Star Boot Camp was born in April, 2006. I started in a dark parking lot of a public park, with 3 people – 2 of which were family members…so needless to say, things have changed a little since then.

Having a community of professionals that are dedicated to helping anyone with a fitness goal is what DVRT is really all about!

JH: Why did you design it the way you have (meaning equipment, format, etc.)?

CH: The more I learned about the human body, the more I realized that the vast majority of ‘machines’ people were stuck using were not the best choices for real gains in mobility, strength, injury prevention and overall conditioning. I knew I had to start thinking a little more ‘outside the box’ with better training philosophies, other than simply pushing dead weight up and down in a single plane of motion, going faster and faster and using heavier and heavier loads…all of which are fine to a degree, but that really is the tip of the iceberg.

Enter the DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training system…this is where I found real meaning and real science…yet, it wasn’t just about a ‘sandbag’ or other random tool – it was about structure and amazing progressions to the individual. These are CRITICAL aspects for success…the successful way I wanted to train myself and train our RSBC family. After successfully passing Level 1 and Level 2 DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training certifications, I knew, without a shred of doubt, that our RSBC training was going to be better than ever.

The science and results of DVRT made Curtis a believer to make it a big part of his training system!

JH: Why not follow the model of many other gyms?

CH: Simply stated, RSBC is not a ‘gym’. It’s a training facility with top level coaching, properly developed movement progressions – all set to an exciting, energy filled atmosphere that loyal, dedicated RSBC family members could love and support each other in fun, inspirational way.

JH: What types of results have you seen?

CH: RSBC family members are doing things they never thought possible – everything from a dramatic increase in their range of motion in their joints (especially for those recovering from injury or surgery), running their first obstacle race or marathon to simply fitting into their favorite clothes and looking better naked. Wink
