Unless you have been living under a rock, you have likely heard that meditation is good for you in a variety of ways. I’ve even written about how certain meditative practices can help manage chronic pain and aide in long-term weight loss. The benefits of meditation becoming more and more discovered in research all the time such as…
So, you can see the reasons to learn to meditate cover a wide scope of goals and ways it can help both fitness and health. HOWEVER, even with all these benefits, A LOT of people finding meditation a difficult practice to stay consistent with and experience all these variety of results. Some believe meditation too difficult because they think meditation is about not having any thoughts in their head. That isn’t true at all, meditation is about being aware of your thoughts and allowing them to pass without holding on to them an creating judgements around them.
Others think it is simply too boring, some believe they can’t find the time (sounds like a similar issue with exercise), there are some that are so overwhelmed that sitting down and being with their thoughts and feelings actually makes things worse! That is why I wanted to provide an easy option for people to get rid of their reasons around meditation and have a reason to make time for it.
Moving meditation is actually a term used in research to describe a specific type of exercise that often gets overlooked. In using the body as a means to calm our mind we are able to work with difficult feelings and thoughts. Deep breathing that is used with moving meditation also helps calm the nervous system and helps our body and mind feel more relaxed. Using movements like I describe below also allows us to reinforce fitness goals such as increasing mobility, stability, and even getting a bit of an aerobic workout. The more things we can accomplish with our time, the more I find people actually can be consistent. This is just the start to a much bigger world we will eventually explore, but I encourage you to try this meditative movement challenge as I break it down below and see what you experience and learn about yourself.
