It was just last Tuesday. I had finally agreed to see a friend of my wife’s to look at my chronically bad right foot. 13 years of competitive basketball wasn’t the perfect recipe for health feet! In fact, I began to think that my right foot causing some tightness in my right hip.
Her friend is a top ankle/foot doctor and as he began to assess me he stopped rather quickly. He shifted his chair back and asked, “do you have a problem in your back?” “Yea?” Was my simple yet perplexed response. I began to share with him what my body had been through years ago and what degeneration over time began to show in my back.
With great concern he asked me, “what is your workout?” I thought he was asking me to give me some input, maybe some of the doctor advice that I had found outdated and really unhelpful. This wasn’t that!
As I tried to explain to him what I was doing with my DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training workouts he just kept looking at me with great confusion. It wasn’t that he didn’t understand what I was doing, he seemed be in a bit of disbelief! All he could say back to me was, “how are you even doing that?!” He told me based upon what was happening to my body there should be NO WAY that I should be able to perform what I was doing. It struck me.
I could have been depressed and frustrated by my body and what injuries had done to it. I thought maybe my training, what I had been writing about for the past almost ten years was a fraud!
I was VERY wrong, I had been looking at what DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training had done for me. Instead, I was kinda proud. This system, this program, this DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training didn’t fail me, it had been saving me.
The fact that the doctor was in complete shock at how functional, at how capable, at how level I was still functioning DESPITE these unfortunate issues happening in my body, wasn’t a loss, it was a major victory.
It made me think of what DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training really is, many people think it is about our USB, but it isn’t.
As DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training Master Instructor, Kari Negraiff put it, “DVRT is about going from good to great.”
Here is the thing, good to great can mean many different things. In my case it was being able to do high level activities in my life despite the limitations happening my body. I am no longer a competitive athlete, I am not focused on being shredded, I am focused on having no limitations on my life, having the ability to achieve small to great things each and every day, things that really matter.
The funny part of what I have just shared with you all went down while I was training for our DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training Clean and Press test. For myself, it is 50 repetitions in 5 minutes with a 100 pound Burly USB. Even all that was going on with my body, I was doing better than some amazing lifters I knew!
