Probably shocked could be the best way to explain how I initially felt about it.
Maybe even go to the extent of defensive.
I didn’t know putting forth what seemed to be a simple concept would get such backlash.
People that I have great respect for stood up and questioned whether or not this would hurt the integrity of DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training.
However, it wasn’t a spur of the moment thought.
From day the first time we gave our initial DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training certification five years ago in Sweden I knew I wanted to do this, it would have its time. Yet, it had to be the RIGHT time and I think that time has come.
What is “it”?
A fitness standard, a specific measure of many different qualities all at once.
The first dilemma was, “what would the test be?”
I had thought long and hard about what would be the best measure for our DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training program. Senior DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training instructor, Troy Anderson, and myself went back and forth for months before we put this new fitness standard out.
We needed to make sure it was a good standard though, we needed to make sure that it accomplished the goals that we had set forth in making this an important part of our DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training system.
The DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training Clean and Press test was firstly put out to our Master Instructors. We knew we were giving them about eight weeks till we met at our annual conference in Phoenix at the end of October.
These are incredibly bright fitness professionals, successful business owners, and many accomplished athletes in their own rights. To be very candid, I thought when I put out this test it would be met with excitement, I was VERY wrong!
Caution, hesitation, and apprehension, are all good ways to describe the feedback I was getting. It hit me though, I hadn’t done a good enough job of explaining WHY we were using this a standard in DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training, after all the why’s are the MOST important part of this standard.
I know the content DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training isn’t just another certification, yet, it was important to get the word out to others. It have been very apparent that the value of getting a certification had dropped dramatically even in just the past 10-15 years.
What is a certification anyways? Well, it SHOULD have the attendee pass a set of standards that demonstrate that the individual has gain proficiency in different aspects of the program. In fitness terms, I think that means understanding the concepts of a system, having technical proficiency, and be able to program the variables in the system.
We had been testing people’s comprehension with a rather stringent written test. However, I thought there was a gap. How were we measuring these other attributes?
The other challenge has been keeping the wonderful experience of a DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training live program. I won’t lie, our DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training programs are tough! Not just from a physical perspective, but mental one as well.
The combination of mental and physical fatigue told us that people were going to be walking away having missed some very important ideas about DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training.
We could help that though if we made sure a minimum level of fitness was being met allowing our students to absorb more information, practice more techniques, and well, have more fun!
In selecting the “right” exercise we thought what drill could demonstrate so many core concepts of DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training. The Clean and Press just made sense. It has five extremely important aspects… a hip hinge, a plank, vertical pushing/pulling, flexibility in the upper and lower body, and accuracy.
If someone could demonstrate all five of these ideas well, then their ability to teach and demonstrate many core DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training drills should be at a much higher level.
“Does passing a fitness test make you a good coach though?” This was the sentiment that really stuck with me when our Master Trainers asked this very question. After all, our goal in DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training courses is to develop a level of expertise where people can teach our system and movements. Does their fitness matter?
Well, yea.
Assuming one is able to master the technique of the fitness standard, really the question becomes how can they develop a program that helps them work towards their goals?
The past ten years has caused many fitness professionals to despise the term “personal trainer”. Why? Unfortunately the quality of the profession ranges so much and let’s face facts much of the public’s first contact is with the lower level professional. However, this is a subject for another day.
If we look at the idea of a trainer though and training, we see they both actually infer our ability to lead people to accomplishing specific goals. We “train” if we are looking to achieve identified outcomes, in business, medicine, sport, and heck, just about any profession.
Fitness is really no different, if we want to really accomplish the goals we set forth, we need to know how to develop a plan to do so. A training program is just that, it is a well thought out (well, should be) plan on how to achieve what we have identified as our goals.
Unfortunately, so many people have no idea how to program and I mean professionals!
Knowing a lot of exercises, and knowing how to perform a lot of exercises is good, but not with being to develop the right plan. Creating gut busting workouts that make you lay on the ground rarely requires a professional’s touch either.
Our DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training Clean and Press test challenges you to develop such a plan.
You may admit you really don’t know how to program. Now what? What you will be seeing very shortly is a ton of great information and resources developed by our tremendous team to help you get there.
This isn’t a “do it for you” program. We are going to teach you the how’s and why’s, but inevitably you are going to have to problem solve for your individual needs, abilities, and lifestyles. That is programming!
The last thing is we want YOU! Yea, that old Uncle Sam saying, we want you to be part of our community. Why should you care? So many people think DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training is about a “sandbag”, or one to two cool exercises. DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training is a comprehensive fitness system.
