DVRT Master, Amanda Thebe (Creator of DVRT Over 40 Strong)
Strength = Empowerment
One of the reason I am such a proponent of DVRT Ultimate Sandbag fitness the impact it has had on me personally. When you break down how being strong can impact one’s daily life there is no question that being real world STRONG has huge impact upon how you life REAL LIFE! I’ve experienced this so much in my every day life that I want to share so many others.
Too often we think of strength-building as something for vanity seeking glamour girls and bro-science meatheads in the gym, which is a pity because in my view it represents virtue and strength that positively impact everybody’s life. That is one of the things I love most about DVRT Ultimate Sandbag fitness, it makes you live as great as you look! However, let me break down how it has impacted my life.
The Strength of Anti-Fragility
Anti-Fragility = increased in capability, resilience, or robustness
Being fragile is not fun. Being fragile will lead us to injury, pain and illness. Strength training promotes the opposite, being anti-fragile. We are a nation of sitters, a people of muscular imbalances (think tight hips here) – this then can present itself as shoulder or back pain. What DVRT Ultimate Sandbag fitness will do for you is provide you with better posture, less chance of injury, greater balance and flexibility, and improved joint stability. Real life comes so much easier when you are more capable of protecting your body from injury.
My motivation in creating the DVRT Strong Over 40 Program was to help people live more anti-fragility lives. Using the DVRT Ultimate Sandbag fitness to build strength around functional movements, means we build strength in the muscles that stabilize us and help us to protect the joints and the spine.
Why designate an “Over 40” title? The sad reality is that statistics have shown that people over 40 have the highest percentage of obesity and overweight tendencies (from the Center of Disease Control). This could be due to a lot of factors like decreasing hormone levels, loss of muscle, but sadly A LOT has to do with fitness programs seeming like they are “too much time”, “too hard”, basically too unaccessible to real people’s lives. That doesn’t have to be the case as most of the people I work with on a daily basis are over 40 individuals with VERY busy lives.
This means your fitness program has to be smarter, focused, and have greater purpose than JUST making you sweat a lot! So, how can we go about achieving smarter and overall better fitness? Like what? Where should we be placing our time and focus?
A great example of this is the Ultimate Sandbag fitness Lateral Bag Drag. Here we have an exercise that requires us to great a resistance against the body’s desire to rotate as we drag the Ultimate Sandbag, so we have to create a force that resists this movement and stabilize the body.
The Strength of the Mind Body Soul Connection
Let’s talk mood enhancers! When we strength train our body produces two anti-depression bio-chemicals – serotonin and endorphins, therefore we know that it can have a positive effect on some forms of mental illness, such as depression – for me personally, I have struggled with depression from peri-menopausal hormone swings, so DVRT Ultimate Sandbag fitness workouts have been a great medium to not just challenge my mind, but help my mood and mind (which my family appreciates!) This has been a big part of my survival plan. There are great philosophers of our age who have stated that without a strong body (wo)man will never be able to develop his other virtues to their highest potential.
One of the best ways I have found to keep my mood lifted is to get my temperature and get sweating and during the DVRT Strong Over 40 program this will definitely happen. When we train, if we work with a load and then move that load quickly, we are going to get the blood pumping. My favorite way to get my heart racing is using the Ultimate Sandbag High Pull, the action of powerfully moving the hips forward and driving the elbows high so that the Ultimate Sandbag floats above my chest. That’s my cardio!
No, I don’t spend an hour or even 30 minutes on the treadmill or ellipticals. I don’t perform aerobics class after aerobics class. Instead, dedicated, specific, and intentional training gives me so much more!
The Strength of Rebound
Biochemically when our body becomes stressed, is more likely when we will become injured. The opposite is true when we carry lean body mass, when our body stresses we rebound quicker. The muscles we build become a protector of our body, when we push our muscles through discomfort and a littler harder than before (both of these things in a positive way) then we recover better. So the answer of course to beating our natural muscle atrophy is load bearing exercise.
The Strength of Aging Epically
Strength training leads to increased lean muscle mass, which in turn leads to an increased Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the rate at which your body burns energy at rest. This makes it easier to maintain your weight loss over the long term. This metabolically active body you now have will improve insulin sensitivity and improve cardio-vascular output, fighting heart disease, some cancers and osteoporosis. We know the latter because physical activity, particularly weight-bearing exercise, is thought to provide the mechanical stimuli or “loading” important for the maintenance and improvement of bone health.
These are just a few of the reasons why I am so pumped about my new program, I know that training with these philosophies in mind have Improved quality of life, mental state and overall health. One of the best things I have ever done for myself and my family is dedicating time for me and my own health and fitness. I can’t tell you how much DVRT Ultimate Sandbag fitness has been such an integral part of both! My only hope is to help others experience the incredible results both physically and mentally that I have through great functional fitness.
