Ultimate Sandbag Training for Better Backs

This past weekend was another wonderful opportunity for DVRT. I was fortunate enough to present several times at one of the biggest fitness education conferences in Europe. Any opportunity to share what DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training is really about is something that we take as a great honor.

We spend three sessions showing how DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training can help the trilogy of injuries….low back, knees, and shoulders. This has been a mission of mine because I know how much pain and injury keeps people from being healthy and just as importantly healthy. The pain epidemic in the US is well documented and I think most don’t understand how crippling it is to people. 

Being at this conference I met so many people that both had clients that struggled with these very issues as well as an equal number battling pain themselves. I take a different approach with DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training than some other programs. We don’t look at “fixing” people, we aim to make people continually better. There is a difference and I think we have to change our mindset because fixing people can be far more complex than we realize. However, continually working towards making them better is definitely something we can shoot for with people. 

During the whole weekend people told me how amazed they were the simple concepts of DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training made so much sense, but also how it helped them. Even those that weren’t in pain found themselves moving and feeling better in general. However, the two best stories came after our last session of the weekend. 

With well over 100 people in each session it is impossible to know people’s health history or where they are starting from. Sometimes even I am amazed at how much we can transform people with the foundations of DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training. 

After the last session two women came up to thank me. One was a fitness professional that had been battling knee pain for months. She was so frustrated how it had impacted her ability to workout and just couldn’t get better. It was the first time she didn’t have pain in the months! She was so excited not to just workout again, but to do so with the knowledge of better movement and keeping herself healthy!

The other almost made me tear up a bit. She wasn’t a trainer at all. This woman decided to attend because she wanted to make herself better. A few months ago she had actually broken segments of her back. Her pain was quite intense and she was simply hoping coming to a conference she could find something she could do to help herself. 

She shared with with me that it was the first time in a long time she had no pain! What was equally as moving was the smile she had on her face as she told me how much the simple concepts of DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training helped her. 

I realize that if I were reading this blog post I would probably be rolling my eyes. How can something like DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training be so powerful, this seems like some pretty lofty fish stories right? 

It isn’t magic, it isn’t me embellishing, it is just using the science of the body and movement to help people. The DVRT that I always put before Ultimate Sandbag Training is the MOST important part of what we do. I tell our coaches, “people don’t want “sandbags” they want solutions!” 

If I had just shown some “cool” exercises, but not spent educating the why’s it would have just been more of the same for these attendees. The DVRT why is what gives power to Ultimate Sandbag Training, without it, it IS just a bag of sand! 

I was reminded of this simple fact by some of the other speakers that came to our session. In particular, I got to know a bit the guys of Strength Matters. Interestingly enough we have very similar philosophies about training which is probably why we hit it off quite well:) 

Speaking to them initially I think they had one impression of what I was going to teach in sandbag training. Having them see what we ACTUALLY do they told me, “we got it.” What did they “get”? It isn’t using sandbags or even the Ultimate Sandbag that matters. What matters is what we try to achieve in teaching people to use their bodies better. 

It is a lot to ask people to think differently, however, as Einstein said, “we can’t solve problems with the same thinking that caused us to create them.” My biggest motivation in sharing our DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training blogs so much is not to teach you guys about more exercises. I am driven to help our fitness industry to transform into what Strength Coach, Kevin Carr, said, “become health practitioners”. In order to do so we have to raise the standard of what we do.
