It is as though people are starting to really scratch their heads.

I saw it this weekend at one of the top fitness conferences, the Perform Better Chicago Summit.

We got to see it when we presented DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training, but it may have been more interesting later on. After all, people expect us to be excited about DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training. However, it is even better when they get to experience the benefits we know exist. Yet, that STILL wasn’t the most interesting part of the weekend.

Renown fat loss expert, Alwyn Cosgrove, was presenting on the newest research and techniques to produce fat loss. You can imagine my surprise when he got to a slide featuring our DVRT Ultimate Sandbag study and talking about the unique benefits of DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training.

Before we get too far down why great coaches like Alwyn Cosgrove are fans of DVRT, let’s look at some interesting research he was referencing.

There was a study performed looking at different amount of work and basically interval based strength training fat loss. On one had you had the traditional 3 sets of 10 and the other you had a ground that performed a set of 6, rested 20 seconds did another set of 2-3 reps, and then repeated one more time.

The traditional group ended up doing more work, lifted more total weight than the interval group. Both groups worked to failure. So, the traditional group did better right?

If we break it down this is what happened… The traditionally trained group did almost double total work (7835 vs 3872 kgs) of the high intensity group. The traditionally trained group trained about 64 minutes a session versus 32 minutes for the high intensity. The traditionally trained group started with a resistance 70-75% of their maximum while the high intensity worked with 65-70% of their maximum.

So, let me get this straight. The traditionally trained group did more work, at a higher percentage, and a longer period, but ended up burning LESS total calories in the 22 hour period! HUH?!

We really don’t know why, but as Coach Cosgrove described it may be due to some recent findings that muscle may be more of an organ than we ever thought. During these high intensity periods the muscle actually produces something that stimulates this greater fat loss and caloric burn.

Okay, cool, but how does this relate to DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training. As Coach Cosgrove began to describe you could do this with traditional weights, but you would have to have a lot of them! In his mind these strategies are even better than just using more weights because they stress the body in very unique ways. That is why Coach Cosgrove continues to believe the future of strength and fitness is asymmetrical and alive strength training.
