I don’t know about you, I’ve rarely had anyone say to me they want to be strong, but they don’t care how fit they are. I’ve almost never had anyone said I want to be in great condition, but I don’t care about being strong. We typically want it all and most fitness professionals will tell you that is impossible. I think it is just about doing things smarter! Wait till you see how Ultimate Sandbag workouts could be the perfect answer!
The problem, I believe with the term “strong” is that many people quickly think in their heads of massive individuals looking like they are going to pass out while lifting incredibly uncomfortable looking weights. The other thought that sits in a lot of people’s minds is “I can’t be strong, I’ve never been strong”. Strength is important and not only important, but relative and empowering.
I use our Ultimate Sandbag workouts to teach people being “strong” is so many different things. It is moving with agility, it is resisting unwanted movement, it is creating force in all three planes of motion, it is the ability to REPEAT great levels of effort. Can you imagine if you could only be strong for 1, 2, or 3 reps? Life and sport take strength to be far more than that!
That’s why I have been so adamant about using renowned Strength Coach, Robert Dos Remedios (Coach Dos) Metabolic Resistance Training concepts. What Coach Dos has been doing is revolutionize what we think of both strength and HIIT workouts.
Coach Dos has been a big proponent that work capacity in developing success. What is work capacity? Work capacity is, essentially, the total amount of work you can perform, recover from, and adapt positively to. It is the foundation to be strong and what most people REALLY mean when they think of being in great shape!
If work capacity is so good and important why doesn’t everyone do it?!! The simple answer is because it is the hard work, it is the training that makes you really uncomfortable, it is the GOOD stuff! Like most things in life, the most challenging things are often the best too. However, in our modern era, most people don’t like hard work, but also most people don’t experience the success they want! The other reason is that most people think of HIIT as just pure abuse to the body. Just like any other training method it should be thoughtful, progressive, and purposeful!
How does Coach Dos’ MRT change that? Why do DVRT Ultimate Sandbag workouts help so much?
MRT is about being true high intensity interval training. Meaning using a VERY high intensity and then allowing recovery. Typically you will see work intervals of 15 or 20 seconds followed by recovery of 45 or 40 seconds. That seems easy right? Not at all, you want to use a weight heavy enough to get 6-8 reps. If you are getting more than that your aren’t working intensely enough. You should be THANKFUL for that 40 or 45 seconds.

DVRT Master, Cory Cripe shows how 3 exercises done with the right intensity and that 15:45 format can be incredibly intense but also build important qualities of better fitness.
Ultimat Sandbag workouts work so well because we have the instability of the Ultimate Sandbag that increases the demand of every exercise, combined with the fact we can move in so many different ways to create that high intensity.

Here is a great example of how we can use Ultimate Sandbag workouts to build both strength and conditioning at the same time. I’ve even included two options of each movement, so if you don’t have a lot of different weights, try the progression of the movement.
