We have all heard the stat, 80% of Americans will experience low back pain at some point. What we do NOT often hear is that the majority of that low back pain is acute, meaning it will resolve itself with minimal intervention within 3 months. The much BIGGER issue with low back pain comes from the chronic situations where low back continues beyond that 3 month period. THAT is the low back pain that becomes expensive, frustrating, and a huge emotional challenge for many people.
If you are reading this, you have probably tried to help someone with low back pain at one point or another. I can tell you in over 25 years of coaching I had quite a few people with both acute and chronic low back pain and it isn’t always easy. While I would LOVE to tell you there is ONE thing that fixes all low back pain. Trust me, there are plenty of people that will try to tell you such a thing exists! I mean, I COULD try to sell you on a DVRT exercise for the core, maybe mobility, who knows that would fix all your low back issues but the truth is that low back pain (especially chronic) is much more complicated than having a single solution.
So, instead of trying to think of what ONE thing we could do for low back pain, I think it is FAR more productive to think about what can a fitness professional do in their scope of practice to have a positive impact upon one’s pain. That is exactly what physical therapist, Jessica Bento and I discuss in today’s video. Below we break down the following ideas…
-Why isolated training is not just inefficient, but could be training your muscles incorrectly!
-What your core training SHOULD be aiming to achieve.
-Are there such things as bad exercises and how would we even distinguish a good from bad exercise?
-Is breathing really the cause of low back pain?
Plus a lot more! I hope you will have a chance to check it out and see some of our examples of how we put these ideas into practice. We will have a part 2 coming soon so if you have specific topics you want us to address feel free to drop them to us at info@ultimatesandbagtraining.com
